How I lost over 85 lbs!

Well this is the weekend…the weekend that started my weight loss journey.  Since February 2012, I have lost over 85 pounds.  My sister’s wedding was my reason for finally getting serious about the weight loss process.  I know it is silly but I really did not want to be the large lady in her wedding pictures.  But I am so thankful this journey started because I have gained so much more than just not being the large lady in pictures.

So starting out I was 233.8 pounds.  This was me in Hawaii the week before I started the program Take Shape for Life.

My friend Susan had done the program and lost weight; subsequently, Susan had become a health coach for the organization.  For some reason I just knew this program would work for me.

My biggest problem (in regard to eating) was I was not eating in the morning and then just gorging in the afternoon/evenings.  My story is not revolutionary at all…I am a mom who is responsible for getting two others dressed, fed and out the door in the morning, so it was a miracle that I myself was getting dressed – I did not think I had time to eat.  Plus in my mind I would think “Isn’t it good for me to be cutting those calories out anyway since I really wanted to lose the weight?”  NO!!!  Your body needs fuel to start its day and if it does not have fuel it is going to hold onto that fat with all it’s might because it thinks you are starving it.  And then on top of that, I would go exercise HARD for an hour so then my body was really starving.

I started Take Shape for Life in February and it has changed my life!  Here is general information on Take Shape for Life:
Take Shape for Life is a comprehensive program that is safe and effective. It was designed by doctors to help people not only lose weight, but to reduce Blood Pressure and Cholesterol and help Type II Diabetics stabilize blood sugars.
Some of the reasons that people love Take Shape for Life is:
-Free personal Health Coach
-Lose 2-5 lbs per week for the first two weeks and 1-2 lbs a week thereafter
-Low hunger, high energy, no cravings
-Able to reduce or eliminate medications
-Cost neutral or less than what you currently spend on food

The program consists of high-quality, medically formulated meal replacements combined with free coaching support to help you lose weight and keep it off. It is not a diet, but a two-phased approach for weight loss and maintenance.
The first phase/the “weight-loss” phase of the program is called the Medifast 5 & 1 Plan which includes eating 5 Medifast meals and then 1 Lean & Green meal. So you get to eat 6 meals a day and still lose weight…how great is that? Then there is a transition plan that will gradually increase your caloric intake and re-introducing a wider variety of foods. And then there is the Maintenance Phase where you will monitor your weight and balance your calories. You will stay active and make smart choices.
As far as what really interested me about this program was the ease of it.  In the 5 & 1 plan, the 5 Medifast meals are all interchangeable and there is a variety of foods (shakes, soups, bars, pretzels, brownies and even more).  So as I was jetting out the door in the morning and needing breakfast, I can just grab a bar and know that I am getting 20% of my daily vitamins and minerals in that one meal…along with a ton of protein which will help me from being hungry.  So it was a win win…I also could eat brownies (WHAT!?!).  So I hit the program hard and have not stopped being committed to it.

I hit my goal weight of 145 mid-November.  I am now in the middle of the Transition phase, and it is going well.  I have stayed right between 145 and 147 through the transition and that is even with Thanksgiving smack dab in the middle of it.  It was funny as I was about halfway through losing this weight, I was really nervous about the transition/maintenance phase…I did not think it was possible to keep this weight off, but now that I am actually at my goal weight, I truly know that I will not go back and this program has given me the tools to know that for a fact.

(I will also post more pictures of the wedding later - I just can't find any this morning :))

Because I have had such success on this program and really truly believe it is so much more than a diet, I have decided to become a Health Coach for the Take Shape for Life organization. I want to pass this gift of health onto my friends and family as well as anyone else who is ready to make a change in their life! If you want more detailed information on the program you can visit my website – just think you/a family member could be pounds lighter by New Year’s… wouldn't that be outstanding?
Okay I think that is my story… and if you have any questions or need any further information, please feel free to call me (503.780.4027) because I would love to talk with you about how my life has changed.
Cheers to a new chapter in life!!!!

New Program...Better Behavior?

So I have decided since it is Monday and I am feeling a little wacky, the kids and I are going to start a new program today...it is a program that I learned about from my fabulous friend in Indianapolis, Kiera Dubach. She explained it to me when I was out there in September and I have been meaning to implement it since then, but just have not had a chance.

So here is how it works:

  • Each kiddo starts out the day with a set amount of "coins."  The example that Kiera gave me was you give the child 4 quarters, but I think I am going to start out with $.50 and then gradually build as responsibilities build.
  • Throughout the day, they can either keep all their coins or if they are being crazy(in a bad way), not listening, fighting with each other, or whatever they might be doing that I deem not good behavior, I can take away a coin or all the coins depending on what the instance is.  I also think as this evolves, if they decide to do something nice/outstanding, I can reward an "extra" coin.
  • Whatever they are left with at the end of the day, they get to put into their piggy banks (or in Tommy's case, his football helmet bank).
  • Then after a period of time (I think I am going to chose 2 weeks for the first little bit and then adjust to what works best), you have a counting party - we count up how much money is in the bank and then separate it into thirds...1) for saving, 2) for spending and 3) for charity of their choice.
Our first day...today!!
I am super excited about this because I think it will give me a parenting tool for better behavior/listening and it also teaches the kiddos about saving, spending and the importance of giving to charity. I think Morgan might be a little young for this program, but then at least she will be into it later - plus I think it would be hard to start it with Tommy and not with Morgan since she wants to do everything her brother does.

So let me know what you think...have you done anything like this?...has it worked?...I would love to hear your opinions.

Cheers to fun new programs that will be beneficial to both me and my kiddos!

It has been a while...

Okay so it has been a while...so much has happened since June:

  • Tommy started kindergarten at our local public school (Charles F. Tigard Elementary - CFT for short)
  • Tommy started playing soccer with Southside Soccer (3 x a week)
  • Morgan started Pre-Ballet class
  • We found bridesmaid (or matron in my case) dresses for my sister's wedding
  • Morgan is almost potty-trained
  • We have been traveling a ton...Seattle, Indiana, etc. (and that does not even include Mike's travel schedule)
  • And the biggest news of all, I have almost made my weight loss goal of over 85 lbs and I have become a Health Coach with Take Shape for Life (the fabulous comprehensive program that has allowed me to lose all this weight and what I feel confident will help me keep the weight off for good!)
So let's take these one at a time...

Kindergarten
So far the year has been great!  Tommy really likes his teacher Mrs. Darby and seems to be making some good friends.  I was just able to volunteer in his classroom last week for the first time.  It was so much fun and I loved being around the kids.  I am volunteering in his class at least once a month and then I am also being the Art Literature (a volunteer parent program) teacher.
Was he excited or what?

Southside Soccer
This has been great!  Tommy is on a 6 person co-ed team called the "Purple Hornets" - there are three boys and three girls on the team.  We practice on Tuesdays and Thursdays and then our games are on Saturday.  Our last game is tomorrow.  We are working with Tommy on sportsmanship and not grabbing onto the other players during practice or games.

Pre-Ballet Class
Morgan started her first ballet class in September.  She loves it and constantly asks if it is ballet day.  She is taking it with her friend Hannah.

Bridesmaid Dress/Diana's Wedding
My sister Diana's wedding is in December and over the summer we found a bridesmaid dress...YAY!  So we are set to go there.  This fall has been busy with a shower and a weekend bachelorette party so the festivities are fully underway.  We are looking forward to her intimate wedding in Whistler in December.

Potty Training
Morgan is mostly potty trained, if mom stays on top of it...not necessarily if I do not remind her, but we are getting there.  I am looking forward to no more diapers in this house!

Travel
We had two weddings in Seattle in August, so that was really busy and then I went to Indiana to surprise some of my best friends from college in September.  It was such a fun weekend and they were so surprised! It was awesome.  I have to give a big shout out to their husbands who helped me pull off the surprise - so THANK YOU Nathan and Josh!  You guys rock!
Me, Krisha and Kiera...LOVE these ladies!

Mike and I celebrated our 13th wedding anniversary in Seattle because Mike had a Microsoft conference that he was attending and it gave me a reason to spend three days in Seattle.  SO much fun!

Health Coaching
Since February I have lost over 85 pounds.  Most of you who know me know I have been exercising my little heart out for the past 5 years; however, the weight that I wanted to lose was not coming off my body.  My friend, health coach and now business mentor, Susan, had done Take Shape for Life and become a coach about 2 1/2 years ago.  I was very interested in doing the program, but it just never seemed to be the right time.  Finally in January of 2012, I pulled the trigger.  It was time to get this weight off!  So I began the program in February and was very committed to it. Because this program has been so successful for me, I decided I wanted to pay this healthy journey forward so I decided to become a Health Coach with Take Shape for Life.  I am having a great time helping people and really look forward to chatting with anyone about what I have done/am currently doing!

I do not have a current before and after photo, but it will be coming soon...stay tuned!

So there is the update on the Leeper family...things are busy and it seems like it is not going to slow down until the New Year.

Drop me a note and let me know what you have been up to!

Cheers to so much happening that I have not had a moment to blog :)

Pick Something

Today I am wishing I could pick something and do it really well.  I feel like I do many things okay, but nothing really well.  I see all these wonderful things that my friends (and by friends I do mean my friends because they have amazing talents, but I also mean my cyberfriends that exist in the world of Pinterest) can do and everyone that has these wonderful skills.  I feel like I am always doing things half-assed...which is possibly the most annoying thing I can think of.  These are some of the skills I would like to fully develop/do until I became really good at them so I could see where they could go:
  • Baking
  • Cooking
  • Sewing
  • Organizing
  • Gardening/Veggie Growing
I would also LOVE to have something like this actually produce income for my family...yet again, I feel as if I am not contributing to the bottom line of the family.  I know I am because being a stay-at-home mom is one of the hardest and also rewarding things I have ever done, but it does not help pay the bills.

I also have the volunteering options in my life...at church, at Tommy's new school and anything else I can get my hands on.  I do love to volunteer, but my problem is that I cannot say no (even if I am in over my head).  So I worry when I volunteer that I will get in over my head and be miserable - which then in turn makes people around me miserable...

Humph...I guess I will just keep plugging along and have faith that I will find the right direction for my life.

Sorry about the rant, but for some reason I am struggling with this today.

Cheers to struggling because without struggling you cannot figure out the right path!

Jesse Leeper - "Big Guy", "Biggs"

Jesse Leeper was our dog and really he was our first child.  We loved him like a child and he was definitely considered a member of the family.  He had many the nickname, but Biggs was the one that stood the test of time.

1999ish-May 2012
We adopted him from Mike's Aunt, Uncle and Cousins up in Battle Ground.  It was fate.  It was Christmastime December of 2000.  We were at Mike's Grandparent's house up in Auburn, Washington.  I was telling everyone how much I wanted a dog for Christmas.  Mike was NOT ready to get a dog.  I thought he might surprise me for Christmas, but he was not ready to budge on the dog front.  This is when Mike's Aunt Linda told me this story:

Mike's cousin Joel, who was attending Pacific Lutheran University at the time, found Jesse.  He called the owners who were on Jesse's collar and they said they did not want him anymore - he ran away too much.  So Joel tried to keep him for a while, but a college living situation did not do wonders for a big dog like Jesse.  Jesse went to live with Joel's parents, Aunt Linda and Uncle Warren.

Aunt Linda and Uncle Warren already had a dog, but were housing Jesse until they could find a suitable family to adopt him.  I begged and begged Mike to just stop at Aunt Linda and Uncle Warren's house on our way down the road to at least meet Jesse.  Mike finally agreed and we stopped and met Jesse.  Jesse was the most strikingly beautiful dog I have ever seen.  He looked like a husky in appearance, but not necessarily full husky.  Mike said we could think about it.  The wonderful thing about Jesse was he was not a puppy, so he was completely potty trained.

Mike and I headed down the road and had a party to go to in Salem.  I pestered him all the way down to Salem and then I told everyone at the party what a perfect fit this would be for us.  So then they would go up to Mike and say, "Why won't you let Steph adopt this dog, he sounds perfect!?!"  Finally about half way through the party, Mike came up to me and said we could adopt Jesse.  We were headed to Black Butte for New Year's so Mike called Linda and Warren to see if it would be okay if we could pick him up after we were home from the trip.  They said yes and then he was ours.

We picked Jesse up one night in early January 2001 and brought him home to our house.  We took him out onto our back deck and took him off his leash.  We completely forgot to close the door from the garage to the back deck and Jesse took off out the open door.  We used to live close to Terwilliger Blvd (a very large and busy street in SW Portland) and of course as we chased Jesse, he ran closer and closer to Terwilliger Blvd.  We decided to stop chasing him and somewhat "walk" home.  He stopped and followed us...finally we got him home, but needless to say our confidence was shaken.  Were we really ready for this?  Mike kept reiterating, "NO."

Within that first week of owning Jesse, we took him to the vet at Banfield to have him checked out and to get him any shots that he needed.  That is where we met Dr. R.  She is an amazing vet that I am so thankful was with us through Jesse's entire life.  She estimated Jesse's age to be about one and a half years old.  So still puppy in attitude, but not so puppy that he did ALL puppy things.

We had many adventures with Jesse throughout the years.  He lived in our garage while we were at work when we first adopted him.  Our garage was huge, heated and carpeted (the owner of our house - who we were renting from - used to use the garage as his "gym").  So Jesse had a bunch of space during the day and then he would be in the house with us the rest of the time.

At one point we were carpooling to work and we would leave my Toyota 4-Runner in the garage.  We drove home one day and could not find Jesse in the garage...it was really strange.  Then we searched the backyard and could not find him there.  We then went back into the garage and realized that Jesse was sitting in the front seat of my car.  I had mistakenly left the back window down in the back of my car and Jesse jumped to the back of my car.  As far as we could tell, he had hung out in the car all day.  He could not get out of the car because the back window was about one foot from the garage door and about five feet off the ground.  Hard to jump in, but nearly impossible to get out.  While he was trapped in the car, he chewed off my gearshift nob and a few CD cases.  He was very happy to get out of the car and I never left my window down again!

Eventually Jesse moved into the house once his puppy tendencies subsided.  He was a great dog, although very intimidating to people who were not dog people.  He would jump up on people pretty much until the last year of his life when they arrived at our house...not because wanted to hurt anyone, but because he wanted to welcome them.

Jesse loved the snow...after all he was a husky.  Some of my favorite times with Jesse was being with him in the snow.  Mike called it his "rollie-pollie" because he would dive nose first into the snow and roll back and forth on this back.

Post "rollie-pollie" just soaking up the snow!

Jesse loved the move to our current house in Tigard.  The backyard was bigger and the walks were better because there is a trail right by our house that stretches for miles.  So when we would get home from work in the evening, Jesse would get his walk.  You could not say the word "walk" around him because he would get so excited his feet would do a "happy dance" and you could barely get his leash on him.

Years passed and in December 2006 we added a new baby to the mix.  Jesse was amazing with Tommy.  While he did not like his crying just as much as we did not like his crying, Jesse was enamored with this little baby boy.

Jesse loved baby Tommy and his Daddy, so never was far from them.

And then in 2009, Morgan joined us and I think Jesse and Morgan were soul mates.  Morgan is our child who LOVES animals and she loved giving Jesse pets and loves.

Jesse was never too far from the action!  He loved being with the family.
You may remember from my previous posts that Jesse had a growth develop in early 2011.  You can read more about it here.  Jesse ended up having surgery on the growth and it was cancerous.  It was a fast growing localized cancer, so it would come back.  The vet said the surgery was a great time buyer, but we needed to be prepared for the cancer to return.

It was a very long recovery and poor Jesse had to wear a donut on his head so he would not lick the incision.  When he was so drugged up, he did not seem to mind the donut because it acted like a pillow.  But he got tired of it and so did we.  See pictures here.

But then he recovered and was pretty much back to his old self.  He was having some arthritis issues in his back legs, but that was to be expected of a dog his age.  We so enjoyed the last year of his life and really being able to hang out with him.

In late April this year, I started noticing how hard it was for Jesse to get downstairs in the morning, as well as the growth had returned and was growing rapidly.  He would basically almost fall down the stairs each morning and it was really hard to watch.

Finally I said to Mike I think it is time - he was hurting and we always said we did not want him to hurt.  So May 5, 2012, Mike and I took Jesse to Banfield one last time.  It was very humane, but also very devastating.  He was our first kid and it was so hard to watch him go.  But we reassure ourselves that he is in doggy heaven.  The kids often talk about how much fun he must be having in doggy heaven.

I think the hardest part of losing Jesse has been the day-to-day stuff that you never think about, but make a huge impact on your life without you realizing it.  He was always at the door to greet us when we returned home.  He was always there if we accidentally dropped food on the floor.  He was always in our room at night, sleeping on the bed (in the early years) and on the floor (later in life, when his jumping ability had declined).  He always had a smile on his face when he saw us.  He was always there for us in every way.  We loved him with all our hearts and miss him every day.

Tommy and Morgan playing with Jesse and taking him on a "walk"

So cheers to one of the best dogs we will ever know - Jesse we love you!!

Refelctions on Wee Wisdom Preschool

I went to Wee Wisdom for the first time in January of 2010 because of the wonderful recommendation by my friend Heather Wolf.  She raved about this preschool program and so of course I had to check it out.

At that time, Tommy was attending Day School for Toddlers which was a great program, but it was for kids that were 18 months-4yrs and more of a daycare situation.  While Tommy was at Day School one day, little baby Morgan (4 months old at the time) and I went to visit Wee Wisdom.  Immediately when I walked into Wee Wisdom, I knew it would be a great place for Tommy.  Everyone was so nurturing and the kids were having a great time.  I signed him up on the spot to start there in the fall of 2010.

Tommy was ready for his first day of true preschool at Wee Wisdom in September 2010.

Tommy's first day of preschool at Wee Wisdom

He was in the 3yr old class that attended school on Tuesday and Thursday from 9AM-11:15AM.  This gave me enough time to either attend a Stroller Strides class or teach a Stroller Strides class.  It did not necessarily give me enough time to shower, so I generally picked Tommy up fairly disheveled.  Tommy loved going to school and always wanted to stay longer!  To me it seemed like many of the parents of the kids in Tommy's class had been there before (with their older children) and somewhat knew each other.  I know it does not seem like me, but I was very intimidated by this and pretty much was a wall flower Tommy's first year.  I helped out when I could, but I did have Morgan who at that time was not able to just hang out.  But all in all, it was a great year!  Tommy made some great friends and he was really looking forward to being in the 4yr old class.

In September 2011, Tommy started the 4yr old class at Wee Wisdom.  The 4yr old class was Monday, Wednesday and Friday.  Along with school from 9AM-11:30AM, the 4yr old class was able to participate in lunch bunch which was from 11:30AM-12:30PM.  Tommy wanted to stay and eat lunch with his friends and I was more than happy to pack a lunch and have the extra hour...I can really accomplish a lot with that extra hour.  Tommy was so happy to be back at school with his friends and also made some new friends with kids that joined their class.

Tommy and Morgan on the first day 2011

Tommy, Tanner and Morgan - Look Tommy and Tanner have the same shoes!

Tommy and Teacher Boyd the first day of 2011 school year.
I also was feeling more comfortable as I somewhat knew what was going on and knew most of the parents.  Morgan was also a bit more self-sufficient, so it was easier for me to help out in the classroom.  I stopped teaching Stroller Strides, so that helped in my flexibility of being able to stay and help.  I grew to LOVE this school even more.  I was able to get to know all of the teachers and staff better than I had the previous year.  The more I spent time with these wonderful ladies, the more I realized this was the best possible experience that I could give my child/children.

Tommy and his friend Sarah harvesting at the garden that they planted in spring of 2011.
I am not sure if it is because I had less going on this past year or if Tommy was at school more, but I felt more and more connected to Wee Wisdom.  Tommy's friendships blossomed and he became really close to both Tanner and Dean (two boys in his class).

There was also the budding romance/friendship between and Tommy and Isabelle.   It was pretty cute because Tommy talked about Isabelle a ton and I think Isabelle talked about Tommy a lot too.
Tommy and Isabelle
Every time I came to pick Tommy up, there would be some sort of story about what Tommy had done that day.  Some were funny, some embarrassing, but some were very touching.  Here are just a few of the stories:

  • They would play a game in class with the little magnetic letters and they would spell something and then ask what is this word?  Tommy chose the lower case light blue letter "f" and when asked what word the "f" stands for, Tommy said "f" is for Facebook - oops, guess mom is on Facebook a little too much!
  • Another time we were asked to bring in grocery advertisements from the newspaper.  They were instructed to cut out as many items as they were old.  Tommy, who was 5 at the time, needed to cut out 5 items.  Tommy cut 5 out in a row because he just wanted to be done - of course the 5 items were beer, wine and other alcoholic beverages...talk about embarrassing!
  • When Tommy's class was doing the circus unit, Tommy was very concentrated on winning as many tickets as he could (think carnival games where you win tickets to get prizes).  He did every game he could to win a ticket...I think most of the tickets were from bowling, but regardless Tommy ended up with about 24 tickets. Most of the kids had around 4 or 5 tickets. Time ran out to "spend" the tickets for prizes that day, so the kids were instructed to leave their tickets in their mailboxes.  Tommy left his in his mailbox and the next class time, it was time to redeem tickets.  Well some of the kids had taken their tickets home so they did not have tickets.  Teacher Boyd left the room to get tickets for the kids that had taken their tickets home.  When she came back, she asked Tommy how many tickets he had...he said 4.  He had given his tickets out to his friends that did not have tickets.  Of course when she was telling me this story, my eyes filled with tears because I was so happy my child had been so generous and full of grace.
Part of the room decorated for the circus day!

More of the room decorated for circus day!
Tommy's years at Wee Wisdom has filled him with such love and respect for his friends, his teachers and his family.  Wee Wisdom is such a warm and caring environment, but the wonderful staff does not let him get away with his MANY shenanigans.

Tommy at the Children's Museum Field trip

Morgan is dressed in Wee Wisdom wear as well at the Children's Museum Field trip.

The other amazing that happened this past year is I became better friends with not only the staff, but also the other parents/caregivers.  I have made some friendships that I know will last!

Mrs. Boyd, Mrs. Hedin, Mrs. Fillinger, Mrs. Kepner and Mrs. Abeyta, you are all the most amazing teachers and we feel so lucky and thankful to have spent the last two years with you all.  I thank you all from the bottom of my heart for preparing my son to be the best he can be and getting him ready for kindergarten.  We look forward to Morgan's attendance in September 2013 and we will definitely come in for some Wee Wisdom love and playtime throughout this next school year!

Tommy's end of the year picture that says at the top: "there are only two lasting bequests We can hope to give our children: One is roots...The other is wings"

Cheers to an amazing preschool experience which prepares us all for the next step!

Baby Stuff

Okay I know most people I know are either past this point or a long way away from it, but I thought I would write it down in a blog post so people can find it when they want to...

Funny thing, this list started when we met a couple in January 2012 who were expecting their first baby.  They were at the same point we were about 6 years ago when we were pregnant with Tommy and had no idea what any of this baby crap was that we needed to register for.  Seriously, we had NO idea.  Our first visit to Babies R Us ended with me leaving in tears because I had no idea what anything was.

But then we asked advice from a bunch of people and we ended up taking our moms to Babies R Us to register with us.  Seriously, at 30 years old we had to take our mommies to help us because that was how out of the baby loop we were.

Anyway, gave this lovely couple my email address and said email me if you have any questions.  This woman was on it and emailed me about a week later and said she found a "list" of sorts on a woman's blog and wanted my opinion on it.  So here is the original blog posting: http://joannagoddard.blogspot.com/2011/08/motherhood-mondays-what-to-register-for.html

This mom was brilliant and definitely did a great job compiling her list!  So I just referred to that and then let my new friend know what I liked on it, what we used and what we did not use at all.  Here is my response to the blogger's list:

Books:

I did have * The Happiest Baby on the Block (both the book and DVD) about how to calm a crying baby. Dr. Karp's tips work like MAGIC.

And it was good.  If you have a fussy baby, I recommend reading it (although as you know I had the fussiest baby in history and it did not necessarily work like magic for us, but I think for the general public it is a good resource).

I did not read any other books prior to having the kids…I had a book called Babywise, but did not read it and did not use it.  But I did have a friend who used it and it worked for her.

Onto the baby stuff:

1)      Infant car seats…I agree with any of the Graco.  We had the Peg Perego Primo.  We thought because it was the most expensive, it was the best…not necessarily true.  I also found it was heavier than the Graco which is important when you are trucking it around with the baby in it.  We had an extra base for the car seat so Tommy could ride in both cars and that worked well, so you did not have to have it reinstalled when you needed to switch cars.

2)     Crib – we had a convertible crib (which basically means you can have it be a crib, a toddler bed and a full size bed).  We love that aspect because both Tommy and Morgan have used the crib and toddler bed and now we are getting ready to put Morgan in a full-sized “big girl bed.”  As far as where to buy one, we went and found our crib at Goodnight Room (in Bridgeport Village and I think they have a store in NE Portland)…but they were pretty expensive and we found it elsewhere for cheaper, but it is a fun store to walk around and look.  We ended up buying our nursery furniture from Segals for Children (which just went out of business, but I would bet you could find almost anything on the Internet).

3)     Crib Mattress – we received ours as a gift but they bought it at Goodnight Room.  Any children's store will know that a firm mattress is key, so I would get the mattress where you buy the crib.  The nice thing about our mattress is it is “plastic” on the outside, so if anything soaked through the sheets and mattress pad, it did not stain the mattress.

4)     Crib Mattress Pad – again I think we either registered for this from Babies R Us or just got it from the store we bought the furniture from.  We got a waterproof quilted one to give the mattress a little bit of softness.

5)     Fitted Crib Sheets – this is where Mike and I splurged…we bought really expensive sheets/bumper (which you are not supposed to have anymore), bed skirt, etc.  Looking back on it, it is really not necessary.  I do agree that having 3 sets of the sheets is good, but I would just find something that you like at either Target, Babies R Us and go with that…I would not go with the super expensive (like at Goodnight Room).  We also had these things called waterproof pads and put those in the crib because Tommy was a spitter upper…so I would put his head down on those waterproof pads and then if he spit up, it was just on those pads and did not require I wash the sheets.  With Morgan I never used the waterproof pads, so I would wait to see if your baby spits up or leaks through diapers easily.

6)     Noise Maker – We did not have one…I think it could be a good thing, we just never used one.  And now Tommy sleeps with a fan running in his room and Morgan does sleep better when she has a humidifier going, so we will probably do a fan in her room as well.

7)

8)    Baby Monitor – We originally just had a sound monitor…then when we met some friends down the street (when Tommy was 9 months old) who had a video monitor and honestly it is one of my favorite baby items.  I was constantly stressed out not being able to see Tommy and so I would open the door and then it would wake him up.  With the video monitor, you can see what they are doing.  I HIGHLY recommend the video monitor.

9)     Stroller – we started out with a stroller that our infant car seat just snapped into.  That was good for the beginning, but if I knew what I know now, I would recommend getting a BOB stroller.  They are amazing!  You can get an infant car seat adapter for it too.  I still have my single BOB stroller and when Morgan was born and up until September I had the double BOB stroller (for my Stroller Strides activities).  It really is an investment, but if you plan on running, walking or getting out with the kiddo on a regular basis, the investment is worth it.  They are great strollers.  They seem really large, but really fit everywhere you need to go.  REI has a sale on these strollers in May-ish and in September-ish.  That is probably the best place to buy them.  You can also get them off of Craig's List quite frequently.  But I recommend the BOB stroller over any other stroller out there.

10) Stroller Blanket – I just used some of the heavier blankets that we had…many people like to give baby blankets as gifts, so I would see what you get and see if you need to buy a specific stroller blanket.  I have LOVED these two types of blankets (they have been our favorite) - http://www.swaddledesigns.com/lc/Cozy-Blankets-Stroller-Blankets/SB00/CategoryStrollerBlankets.html  and http://www.littlegiraffe.com/catalog/categories/categories/blankets/chenille-blanket/

11)  Stroller bundle bag – I did not have one of these…they look cozy and if you are planning on being outside a lot in the winter, then maybe, but I got by with just a blanket or two.

12) Baby carriers – I totally agree on the Ergo…it is the best carrier that I tried.  I had the baby bijorn and the Ergo and hands down the Ergo was the best.  My friends also really like the Moby wrap, but I never used it.

13) High Chair – we have a Graco high chair and LOVED it.  It folds down pretty small. Similar to this one http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=4039003 It worked well for both kids.  Also before they were old enough to sit in it (3-5months) we put them in Bumbo http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2324072  and had them sit with us at dinner and/or fed them in that.  It also is nice because it allows them to sit up (but you have to be careful because Morgan liked to roll out of it – Tommy was too chunky).  Then when they got older and were wanting to sit at the table, but not quite ready to do that on their own we got the portable high chair http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=4282469 which was great to take with us to friend’s houses and stuff.  They can sit on the ground in it and eat or they can put it on a chair.

14) Diapers  - We just went with Huggies or Costco’s Kirkland brand.  Whichever was cheaper at the time.  The Costco size is nice because you aren’t buying diapers every week.

15)  Wipes – We buy huggies wipes as well…I tried Costco’s and I found I was using a ton more of them vs. the huggies, so we have just been Huggies wipes people (which you can also buy at Costco).

16) Diaper Genie – We have the Diaper Genie Elite II and it works well for us. I have not used the Diaper Dekor, but I think as long as you have something closed to put the diapers in, you will be good.

17)  Diaper rash cream – we used Desitin, but I think you can use just about anything.  I tried to use Burt’s Bees on Tommy and it did not really clear up the diaper rash, but definitely get some sort of diaper cream.

18) Maxi Pads – YES, YES, YES – one thing they do not tell you is you definitely bleed after having the baby, so have a supply of Maxi Pads.

19) Changing Pad- we used the top of our dresser as well with the changing pad.  It worked well.

20)Changing pad cover – you can get these at Target or anywhere…again Mike and I bought ours to match our crazy expensive sheets, but I would get 3 so you have some when accidents happen and you have to change it out.

21) Cloth diapers – I never used them, but I have heard great things about G-diapers

22) Diaper bag – I had several and switched out if I was feeling the need to change things up, but definitely need a diaper bag.  I loved the petunia picklebottom bags http://www.petuniapicklebottom.com/collections/index/bags/ , but that is totally personal preference.

23) Storage bins – that totally depends on what your nursery looks like.  We have pottery barn kids baskets…but again it is just what you want the nursery to look like.

24) Saline Drops – never used them…but they probably work.

25) Aspirators – I had several of these around the house because I never wanted them to have goopy noses…I have also heard of one that you stick in and then suck on a tube and it gets most of the junk out.  I have not used it, but many of my mom friends swear by it http://www.amazon.com/Nosefrida-The-Snotsucker-Nasal-Aspirator/dp/B00171WXII

26)Baby Nail Clippers – definite must!  Really hard to cut their nails, but their nails grow like crazy.

27) Thermometers – I just have a bunch of underarm digital thermometers throughout the house.  The digital rectal thermometer is something I never had/never have used.

28)Baby acetaminophen – good to have on hand

29) 3 thin, soft blankets – I loved the swaddle blankets at http://www.swaddledesigns.com/lc/Swaddling-Blankets-Ultimate-Receiving-Blankets/UR00/CategoryURB.html because they were big enough once they started to get larger to keep them swaddled if we needed to.  Also they were great for using as nursing covers, laying them down on the grass, changing blanket in a pinch.  I LOVED them!

30) 3 swaddles – this is addressed above and I did not really need any other blankets but the receiving blankets from the swaddle designs.

31) 6-8 tshirts and 6-8 onsies – this depends on the season as to when your babes will be born, but I think it will still be pretty warm, so you should be fine with shirts and onsies – I also really liked putting some sort of pants/skirts/shorts on…I don’t know why but I could not just go diaper and shirt.

32) Pajamas – I definitely needed more than two pair of pjs.  I LOVE Carter’s zip up footie pjs (the snap pjs are a pain in the rear – especially in the middle of the night).  There is a Carter’s outlet that is down in Woodburn and it is a great place to visit after you have had all of your showers so you can buy just good basics at a great price.  If your child does not like to be swaddled or they are getting too big but you feel like they need a little more than just pjs, I loved sleep sacks.  And of course these were my favorite http://www.swaddledesigns.com/lc/Wearable-Blankets-Sleep-Sack-zzZip-Me-Sack/ZS00/CategoryzzZipMe.html  (PS the temperature of your baby is one of the hardest thing to understand…are they too hot, too cold, just right?  I heard once that if you check their hands, ears and toes, those are good indicators.  If those areas are warm, they might be too warm, if they are cold, they might be too cold.

33) Gentle laundry detergent – there are a ton of brands out there…most of the ones you want are free and clear of dyes and perfumes.  With Tommy all I used was Dreft (probably the most expensive), but then with Morgan I think I used the ALL Free and Clear.  You also have to wash all their clothes prior to them wearing them…and you do that for quite a while, so you will need a bunch of detergent.

34) Puj tub – We just used a large plastic tub.  It worked well for both kids and then we threw it away.  It was something like this http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=11587341

35) Hooded towels – we bought a bunch from babies r us, but then we bought a bunch from pottery barn kids and those were nicer quality and have lasted a lot longer.

36) Baby washcloths – yes definitely

37) Baby shampoo and body wash – there has been some stuff about Johnson & Johnson baby soap being not good for babies, so I now tend to buy Aveno baby wash/shampoo, but anything like that will be great.

38) Teethers – Sophie the Giraffe is a must, but you might get that as a present.  And that was not a huge teething device for either of my kiddos…but when we got to that stage, I just went and bought something from Fred Meyer.

Breastfeeding

1)      Pillow – I used the Boppy pillow…I would go and see what you think fits best around you right now…because that will be your size post baby.  And if you have a two story house, buy one for each story…that way you are not running up and down stairs trying to find your nursing pillow.

2)     Extra slip cover – good idea and comes with whatever nursing pillow you choose

3)     Breast pump – horrible contraption, but necessary if you want to be away for any amount of time to yourself and I did, so I pumped every night with both kids (I also had a bunch of milk, so the pumping helped alleviate some of the quantity of milk I had in my chest).  I used a http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=10812796 Medela Pump – and the double pump is nice.  Also if you don’t want to ask a friend to show you use the pump (which is what I did because I was too embarrassed to ask the hospital people), bring it to the hospital and have the lactation specialist help you figure it out.  If you get to that point and need to ask someone how to use it, I can fully help you with that.

4)     Storage bags – definitely will need them if you are pumping.  And if you are pumping as often as I was, you need to find storage bags that are easy to buy (for me I bought them at Babies R Us that is about 5 mins from my house)

5)     Breast pads – these were indispensable to me because I had so much milk…I wore them the entire time I was nursing because I seriously would leak all the time.  And I did like the Lansnoh because they were less bulky than the others.

6)     Nipple cream – definitely with your first one because you don’t want them to get chapped because then they crack and bleed and that is not good for either of you…and really your baby can definitely drink right off of a nipple that has the cream on it – and it is kind of a misnomer to say cream – it is more like a thick Vaseline.

7)     Nursing bras – YES!!  I went to Nordstrom right before I had Tommy and bought about 6 nursing bras…they lasted me through Morgan.

8)    Nursing shirts – I loved the tanks that Target has.  They have them in all sizes and colors.  They are like spaghetti strap tanks that have a snap and you can nurse very easily. I am also a huge fan of the hooter hider.  I was a VERY reluctant nurser and I was a big fan of being able to be totally covered.  http://www.bebeaulait.com/products/hooter-hiders-nursing-covers I also was a big fan of the nursing nightgown because I liked to wear pjs to bed and these were really easy to nurse in – these were my favorite http://www.majamas.com/index.php?page=shop.product_details&flypage=flypage.tpl&product_id=53&category_id=9&option=com_virtuemart&Itemid=55

Others:

1)      Play gym is great!

2)     Night light is good

3)     Formula – once we started doing formula, Costco had the best price

4)     Travel Crib – we had a pack and play which is what both Tommy and Morgan slept in our room in (in the bassinet attachment) and then we had the pack and play for when we traveled – we also had a smaller pack and play downstairs so if I was doing something I had somewhere to put the baby (we have a dog and I did not want him stepping on Tommy or anything) when I needed to do something (i.e. go to the bathroom or whatever)

5)     Car window shade – liked this and used it!

6)     Rearview mirror – definitely a must (if you are like me and wanted to be able to see your kiddo) – you attach it to the back car seat head rest and then you can see them in your rearview mirror

7)     Pacifiers – we tried and tried with both kids, but they would just spit them out

Others (in my opinion):

1)      A really comfortable recliner/rocker for the baby’s room.  I lived in our chair that we had in Tommy and Morgan’s room.  I many nights would sleep in it just because it was easier than getting up and going back to my room.  So make sure you have something really comfortable to sit/nurse/rock in.

2)     Burp Rags – these were important with Tommy – not so much Morgan – so it will depend on whether or not your kiddo spits up, but we LOVED the Aware brand of burp cloths. http://www.babyworldonline.net/store/shop_product.php?UPC=420015701869  We received a ton of fancy ones, but they did not hold the amount of milk that was coming out of Tommy’s mouth.  These were awesome!

3)     If you are planning on ordering furniture from a kids store – it takes a bit.  We ordered about 8 weeks out and our dresser was still not here when Tommy arrived.  It was fine, but of course being the first time mom, I was totally freaked out.

4) I would wait until you have your baby, but then decide if your baby is one that likes to be in motion and if so, take a look at swings.  Tommy really liked motion and most of all bouncing, so we ended up having to get a yoga ball and then holding him while bouncing.

There you go...those were our opinions on baby stuff!

Cheers to a new adventure!
